ESTIMATING GLOMERULAR FILTRATION RATE (eGFR)

The Department of Health has recommended that all Clinical Biochemistry Laboratories measure eGFR by a formula based estimation from the serum creatinine, age, gender and ethnic origin of the patient. eGFRs will be reported automatically on all outpatient requests for urea and electrolytes. Because of the exclusions detailed below, eGFR will not be automatically reported on hospital inpatients.

We will report eGFRs in ml/min/1.73m2 - results above 90 will be reported as > 90 ml/min/1.73m2. The result will also give information on the stage of chronic kidney disease according to the UK guidelines on chronic kidney disease in adults. eGFR is only an estimate and is not validated for use in the following: children, pregnancy, acute renal failure, oedematous states, muscle wasting disease states, amputees and malnourished patients. This measurement is for Caucasian patients only. There is a correction factor to be applied for Afro-Caribbean patients, and this will be published on the report form.
