E. Urine antigen tests (legionella and pneumococcal antigen) in respiratory disease.

 

Optimal time of specimen collection

Rapid urinary antigen detection tests are available to aid the diagnosis of Legionaires disease (caused by Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1 only) and invasive pneumococcal disease.

Correct specimen type and method of collection

A urine sample (20 mls) should be submitted from patients with severe community acquired pneumonia (CURB-65 score 3 or more) for both tests.
