Optimal time of specimen collection

At onset of symptoms, before antimicrobial therapy where possible.

Correct specimen type and method of collection

Use a per-nasal swab (Dacron^TM with flexible wire shaft), which can be obtained from Outfits Department, ext: 4773. Place swab in transport media and send to the laboratory directly. NB: Cough plates should not be used.
