Pneumatic tube

The range of samples that are permitted to be transported via the Pneumatic Tube has been increased. These now include:

• Blood cultures

• Swabs

• Urines (N.B. take care not to overfill the container. Tighten the lid correctly, as any leaking sample may result in a shutdown of the Pneumatic Tube System. If there is room in the carrier, add paper towels to absorb any possible leakage.)

The following are still NOT permitted:

• No samples with evidence of leakage

• No units of blood for transfusion

• No radioactive samples

• No histology samples / no samples in formalin

• No pleural fluids or bronchial washings

• No sputum samples

• No difficult to replace samples, e.g. CSF

• No food or drink

• No personal items
