Portering
Specimen collection and transport to the laboratory
1) Routine / non-urgent specimens. The majority of specimens from the Acute block should be sent by the pneumatic tube system direct to the CSB (Pathology) Building. Specimens that cannot be sent via the pneumatic tube will be collected on the dedicated portering rounds provided by Sodexho.
The times of the rounds as follows: -
Acute block:
Monday to Friday
9-9.15am approx.,
10.45-11.15am approx.,
1.30- 2pm approx.
3-3.15pm approx.
5-5.15pm approx.
Saturday / Sunday / Bank holidays
10.30 and 12.30pm approx.
F Block and other areas.
Monday to Friday
9;9-9.15am approx.
10-10.15am approx.
10.45-11.15am approx.
1.30- 2pm approx.
3-3.15pm approx.
5-5.15pm approx.
Saturday / Sunday / Bank holidays

2) Urgent specimens.
For specimens that cannot be sent via the pneumatic tube, contact the Sodexho Porters lodge. They will pick up from wards and deliver to the Clinical Sciences Building.
Any specimen that is not accompanied by a request/report form or is leaking will NOT be processed.
While all specimens are considered to be potentially of "high risk", please ensure that known "high risk" specimens are clearly identified as such.
Sample containers and forms
Specimen containers for Microbiology and Virology investigations are available from the Laboratory Services Unit (LSU), Area F, Wythenshawe Hospital. Tel ext : 4752. Complete special containers request form and send to LSU.
Blood bottles / needles / holders are obtained from the Stock requisition system, i.e. NHS catalogue or through On-line system.
Request forms for Biochemistry / Haematology / Microbiology / Virology can be obtained from Wythenshawe Laboratory Services Unit, Area F.
NB: The laboratory does NOT supply transport trays or hazard bags. These are available from the NHS catalogue or through On-line system.
Specimen Containers for use in Out-Patients:
Blood bottles/needles/holders obtained from Stock requisition - NHS catalogue or from the On-Line stock ordering system.
Micro-virology containers are issued from the Laboratory Services Unit (LSU), Area F, Wythenshawe Hospital.
